U.S. Troops Land With Aid at Presidential Site in Haiti

Elsewhere in Haiti’s capital were the faintest signs that life in its most basic form was slowly clawing back amid the chaos and destruction. The streets of Port-au-Prince contained scenes of commerce and activity Tuesday morning, instead of just devastation and death. Haiti’s Orphan Airlift Takes 53 Kids to Pittsburgh

The orphans were allowed in under an emergency humanitarian program announced Monday. The Homeland Security ruling allows orphaned children from Haiti to enter the United States temporarily on a case-by-case basis. The decision applies to children who have been legally confirmed as orphans eligible for intercountry adoption by the government of Haiti and are being adopted by U.S. citizens. Read more…

UN sending more troops, police to Haiti

The resolution — drafted by the United States — says the UN mission in Haiti “will consist of a military component of up to 8,940 troops of all ranks and of a police component of up to 3,711 police.” China’s UN Ambassador Zhang Yesui, who is chairing the council this month, said the extra troops and police would deploy for six months. Carriers Move to Get Text Donations to Haiti Faster

Combined, the two major mobile giving platforms, mGive and the Mobile Giving Foundation, have raised $42 million via text message commitments from Americans and Canadians. Initially, as we reported, those mobile donations faced 90-day delays to reach Haiti, based on the emergent industry’s practices of billing subscribers via their carriers during their normal payment cycle. CNN’s Anderson Cooper carries bloody boy away from looters in Haiti

CNN on Monday aired another example of a journalist intervening to help, showing graphic footage of anchor Anderson Cooper dragging an injured boy away from a chaotic scene of looting. As the stunned boy tried to wipe the blood from his face, Cooper put his hand on his shoulder. “It’s OK, it’s OK,” he said, looking around frantically for someone to help. Read more…
