2010 Haiti Earthquake
At 4:53 p.m. (local time), January 12, 2010, the nation of Haiti was struck by a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake. The epicenter of the earthquake was approximately 16 miles (26 km) west of Port-au-Prince, the nation’s capital. In the ten days that have passed since the initial earthquake, there have been more than 50 aftershocks ranging as high as 5.9 magnitude. Many organizations are reporting that up to 200,000 people are dead, and another 250,000 are wounded. An estimated 1.5 million people are without a home and face hunger and sickness. Dozens of aid organizations are working to raise money for aid efforts and many nations sent thousands of aid-workers to Haiti.
